The VMDB data base started in 1964 as an initiative of the National Cancer Institute for the purpose of studying cancer in animals. The National Cancer Institute began collecting a standardized abstract of every case that passed through the Veterinary Teaching Hospitals at the Schools of Veterinary Sciences in North America. Since then, 26 universities have submitted more than 7 million records to this data base. Of course, these hospital records are a compendium of all the cases that the universities see, not just the cancer cases. This makes VMDB a valuable resource for researching animal diseases and effectiveness of treatments. VMDB routinely provides more than thirty summary breakdowns for retreived data . Typical summaries include breed, age, sex, geographical region and date of disease onset.
